The solution is as follows…
1. Open Launchpad, find the offending icon(s) and drag them to your normal dock.
2. Right click on the icon that you dragged to your dock and choose ‘Show in Finder’.
Instantly share your Steam local multi-player games with friends over the internet, for free. Using Remote Play Together, one player owns and runs the game, then up to four players — or even more with fast connections — can quickly join in the fun. Go into launchpad. Drag the icon into your dock. Right click on the icon and select OptionsShow in Finder. Right click on icon in dock again OptionsRemove from Dock. Offending icon should be gone from launchpad. This process still works with macOS High Sierra as I just now removed a lingering Deus Ex: HR icon.
3. Now drag the icon(s) from the Finder windows that opens up into the Trash.
4. Finally right click on the dock item(s) that you dragged originally and choose ‘Remove from dock’.
Voila, the icons have disappeared from Launchpad and the annoying orphaned icons that seemed invincible have been thwarted.
