The first step, if you haven’t already started one, is to create a single-player world. Pretty simple, under the “Singleplayer” tab, select “Create World” and then select your game options. There is no specific set of settings for your world; this will not affect your friend from later joining the game.

If you must use a site that uses Java, contact the software developer and ask them to consider to use HTML5 instead. It is much more portable, and much easier to support through software updates, not to mention does not bog down your system as much as plugin based browsing. Stand alone applications are best when they aren't designed to be cross platform from the same code.
