Garry’s mod is among the games that could have a million reasons why you are still addicted to it. However, the game also is the most prone to issues, and among them, lag in Garry’s mod tops the list.
We today, will try to uncover some of these aspects and help you in solving Garry’s mod lag or any similar issues that are preventing you have fun in the game.

Hardware Requirements

First things first, we will look at the minimum PC requirements that are necessary for you to run the game. Although it seems that you can run the game on literally a tin can, it is now not the case since many patch updates and different mods have made the game a bit heavy and can crash your computer if your specifications are not capable enough. So to cover this aspect, let’s first look at what are the minimum specifications required to run the game efficiently.

Windows steam games on mac
OS Windows® 7 or Higher.
Processor 2.4 GHz Processor.
Memory 4 GB RAM.
Graphics DirectX® 10 level Graphics Card
DirectX Version 10.0c.
Network 2MB
Storage 5 GB available space.

Now that this is off your head let’s take a look at some of the other things that can help you in reducing Garry’s mod lag.

Setting Priority

Garry’s Mod lag in many cases can be due to your computer not giving the game the priority it needs to run the game. If playing the game is the only thing you do on your computer then this part is not for you. However, if you know there are several things running in your background, then most likely your Garry’s Mod lag can be due to the issue mentioned.
The quick workaround to this is by setting the game/ launcher to the high priority so that your computer knows that this game is the only thing to be focused right now. Usually, computer cores divide the tasks among them. If there are several things running in the background, then there is little memory left for a game to be run effectively and in turn, can lead to lag.
Just open up your task manager and set the game to high priority. A picture of this is shown below;
Its pretty easy and all you gotta do is press CTRL+ALT+DEL at the same time to open up the Task Manager option, just locate the launcher and set its priority to high. DON’T select Real Time as it may lead to PC crashes while playing.

In-Game Settings

There are many in-game settings that you might wanna tweak to fix your lag in Garry’s Mod. Let’s face it; we don’t play the game because it has such beautiful graphics. The game is good because of the million things that we can do so graphic settings are the least of the concern. SO why not turn down some of the settings and make it a smoother experience than before?
Try lowering your graphics settings to what has been shown below. Hopefully, you are going to experience a reduction in your Garry’s Mod lag.

Console Commands

Apart from the in-game settings, there are also some console commands to help you fix the trouble. These commands will further prioritize the game as it will allot all the cores of your computer for the game. Furthermore, in cases of low RAM, these commands will help in allocating more RAM to the game as well.
These commands are given as follows;
• host_thread_mode “4” //8 for octa-core, 6 for hexa-core, 4 for quad-core, 2 for double-core
• mat_queue_mode “0”
• mem_max_heapsize “2048”
• r_queued_decals “1”
• r_queued_post_processing “1”
• r_threaded_client_shadow_manager “1”
• r_threaded_particles “1”
• r_threaded_renderables “1”
• threadpool_affinity “4” //8 for octa-core, 6 for hexa-core, 4 for quad-core, 2 for double-core
Instead of executing each command individually in the game console, you can also set these in the game’s autoexec file. This will automatically execute all these commands as soon as you run the game.
Go to the following location;
Steam/steamapps/common/GarrysMod/garrysmod/cfg
Here you will find several .cfg files but find the one that names “autoexec.cfg”. Open if via notepad and paste the commands mentioned above.

Fixing Server Side Lag with Kill Ping

Lag in Garry’s Mod can be of two types. There is the lag in which your PC isn’t performing the way it should and in turn you face lag. However, there is also the case of network or server side lag. This happens when you play online and mostly when you are connected to game servers other than your region. If you are having Halo 2: Anniversary performance issues, lag issues or low FPS, you are not alone. Many users have reported the same problems. Let’s see what can be done to make our gaming experience better. The main optimization that is not in Halo 2: Anniversary.

CPU Settings

There are a few things you could try:

Close other programs (especially CPU and RAM heavy programs like web browsers).

Give Halo 2: Anniversary High priority via task manager.

1) Run Halo 2: Anniversary.

2) Open Task Manager [CTRL+SHIFT+ESC].

3) Switch it to the More details view if required using the “More Details” link in the bottom right corner.

4) Switch to the “Details” tab.

5) Right click “Halo 2: Anniversary.exe” on the list -> “Set priority” -> “High”.

OPTIMIZE NVIDIA SETTINGS

If you have an NVIDIA graphics card, you can do some things to tweak your settings. These tweaks require that you go into your NVIDIA 3D settings, from the NVIDIA Control Panel.

Tip: Remember to keep your graphics card driver updated! Especially never graphics card will get a lot of performance boosts from just updating the drivers.

  • -Open the NVIDIA Control Panel (right-click on your desktop and choose it from the menu).
  • -Click Manage 3D settings.
  • -You can either change the settings for all programs and games, or you can do it for select programs. Select Global Settings or Program Settings and find Halo 2: Anniversary on the list. If you choose Global Settings, the changes will affect all programs and games.

Getting rid of junk files

A. Clearing PC from temporary files.

Those files don’t do anything, but they can take up a considerable amount of space and can slow down your PC even if you still have a lot of space on your storage device(s).

It’s especially helpful for those who have installed Windows for a few months and never really cleared junk from PC properly. You can alternatively use some utility programs such as CCleaner, but you still need to double-check whether all of those junk files are removed from your PC. How to do that:

• Press Win + R to open the run box -> type “prefetch” -> remove all junk (some files may not be deleted but it’s OK)

• Press Win + R -> type “%temp%” -> remove all junk (some files may not be deleted but it’s OK)

B. Run disk cleanup

Yet again there might be some programs that can do that for you, but if you don’t have one or you are not sure it removes the junk files – do the following

• Go to windows search and type “disk cleanup”

• Open the program

• Checkmark every file category that’s available and press OK

Maximization of power usage

• If you for some reason don’t want to use BHP, go to Power Option in Windows Control Panel and set it to High Performance. This will allow your CPU to use as much power as possible.

• Turn off C-states in BIOS*

  • This one is highly optional and I don’t recommend anyone doing that unless you know what you are doing! For example, for some motherboards, not all C-states need to be turned off. C-states are the mechanisms that your motherboard uses to save energy. When C-states are turned off, CPU cannot be bottlenecked by the lack of power input from your motherboard. Disabling of C-states works very well with the High-Performance power mode described above.

Game Shortcut

If you have the game shortcut on your desktop.

1. Right-click on it and press properties and the Compatibility tab.

2. Tick override high DPI scaling behavior. and choose Scaling performed by (Application) in the drop-down menu.

3. Tick Disable fullscreen optimizations.

4. And tick Run this program as an administrator.

How do I update my video card drivers?

  • -Press Windows + R.
  • -Type “DxDiag” and click OK.
  • -After the DirectX Diagnostic Tool loads, select the Display tab.
  • -The video card’s name and manufacturer are listed in the Device section. The current driver version is listed in the Driver section.
  • -Visit the driver manufacturer’s website to obtain the most up-to-date driver. Contact the driver manufacturer for assistance with updating the driver. If the computer is under warranty, contact the computer manufacturer.
